Email Tracking

Email tracking reveals how recipients interact with your campaigns—who opened, who clicked, and who opted out. This data helps you understand what’s working, refine your approach, and improve future campaigns.

BetterMerge provides built-in tracking for opens, clicks, and unsubscribes, giving you actionable insights without complicated setup.

Track when recipients open your emails using a small, invisible tracking pixel (1x1 image) embedded in each message.

How it works:

  • When a recipient opens the email and loads images, the tracking pixel fires
  • BetterMerge logs the open event with timestamp and location data

Limitations:

  • Privacy features block tracking: Apple Mail Privacy Protection and similar features pre-load images, making open tracking less accurate
  • Images disabled: If recipients have images disabled, opens won’t be tracked
  • Accuracy: Open tracking is generally 60-80% accurate due to privacy features

What you can learn:

  • Which recipients are engaging with your emails
  • Best times to send based on open patterns
  • Subject line effectiveness (higher open rates = better subject lines)

Monitor which links recipients click, when they click, and where they’re located.

How it works:

  • BetterMerge replaces your links with tracking-enabled URLs
  • When clicked, the recipient is redirected through BetterMerge’s server before reaching the destination
  • Click data is logged with timestamp and location

What you can learn:

  • Which content resonates most (most-clicked links)
  • Engagement depth (how many links each recipient clicks)
  • Call-to-action (CTA) effectiveness
  • Geographic patterns in engagement

Best practice: Use descriptive link text so you can easily identify what was clicked in reports.

Track recipients who opt out of your emails and automatically prevent future sending to them.

How it works:

  • BetterMerge adds an unsubscribe link to your emails
  • When clicked, the recipient is marked as unsubscribed
  • Future campaigns automatically skip unsubscribed contacts

Why it matters:

  • Legal compliance: Required by CAN-SPAM, GDPR, and other regulations
  • Sender reputation: High unsubscribe rates signal poor list quality
  • List hygiene: Automatically removes uninterested recipients

Customization: You can customize the unsubscribe link text and placement. Learn more about unsubscribe tracking.

4. Bounce & Reply Tracking (Optional Add-On)

Section titled “4. Bounce & Reply Tracking (Optional Add-On)”

By default, BetterMerge cannot access your Gmail inbox to track bounces and replies (we respect your privacy). However, this functionality is available as an optional module.

What you get:

  • Bounce detection: Automatically identify hard and soft bounces
  • Reply tracking: See who replied to your campaigns
  • Auto-cleanup: Remove bounced addresses from future campaigns

How to enable: Contact support to add bounce and reply tracking to your account.

  • CAN-SPAM Act (United States)
  • GDPR (European Union)
  • CASL (Canada)

Key points:

  • Recipients can opt out via unsubscribe links (required by law)
  • Tracking pixels are non-intrusive and standard practice
  • Location data is approximate (city-level, not exact address)
  • You can disable tracking for sensitive campaigns

Track every campaign – You can’t improve what you don’t measure

Set benchmarks – Compare campaign performance over time

Segment based on engagement – Send follow-ups to openers/clickers, re-engagement campaigns to non-openers

Test and iterate – A/B test subject lines, send times, and content

Respect unsubscribes – Never re-add unsubscribed contacts manually

Monitor trends – Declining open rates may signal deliverability issues

Email tracking transforms guesswork into data-driven decisions. By monitoring opens, clicks, and unsubscribes, you gain visibility into what resonates with your audience and where to focus your optimization efforts.

Enable tracking on every campaign and use the insights to continuously improve your email strategy.
